Grandma's Memories

As I was sewing a binding on a small wall quilt, memories of my Grandma Mary Johnson appeared.  Years ago she made a quilt for me.  Off and on, I got poked by a pin, but it took me some time to locate that pin and remove it.  In this case, the pin had a glass head.  I was able to use a pair of pliers and break the glass head and the pin slipped out easily.  A couple of months ago, my brother gave me a small quilt that my grandmother made for him.  He has had the quilt for many years.  (30+ years)  The quilt fits a twin-size bed, but not a full-sized bed.  I have a smaller bed, so I decided to use the quilt. Every once and a while, I felt a little pin-poke.  Yes, this quilt also had a pin left in it when grandma quilted the quilt.  Ha! Ha!  It was more difficult to remove this pin because it had a flat metalhead.  I had to maneuver the pin to a seam and guide it through 2 stitches.  This story is not to make fun of Grandma, but to share funny memories. I love these old memories of Grandma!

Yesterday my granddaughter asked me why the dog's ears were sticking up like they were?  My comment back was that he had his listening ears on.

Grandma's Lilacs Soap

My Uncle Scott and his dog in front of Grandma's Lilac Bushes.
Poured and waiting to set up.

lye and raw milk mix

pink and purple micas

oils, butters, titanium dioxide, fragrance, and glycerin

I made 2 loaves of Grandma's Lilacs Soap today.  The first one is just above my writing.  It had so much promise.  I filled 3 spaces with different colors, removed the dividers, topped it off with white, and swerved side to side with a skewer through all layers.  I cut them the regular way, hoping for a nice, unique look.  I was unimpressed.  The bottom looks nice though.

The second loaf is a swirl with all 4 colors.  Most of the pink disappeared, but the other colors stand out fine.

I used tallow, raw cow milk, coconut oil, sodium dioxide, shea butter, coco butter, glycerin, fragrance, color, cosmetic grade glitter.

I hope you had a great week and Happy Valentine's Day!!!

Baby Supply Shopping With Adult Kids

It is fun to shop for baby items, except where the cost comes into play.  I wasn't quite as excited as my son, the daddy.  Yes, I am officially a G R A N D M A.

I hope you have a great week!  Dawnie

A Chicken In Every Pot

Have you heard of a chicken in every pot?  I decided to photograph one of our chicks in a pot.  She is growing leaps and bounds.  Now, our chickens are egg producers first and pets second.  They kids are great chicken wranglers.   I do remember grandma wringing the necks of chickens and chopping the heads off and letting them go afterward.  At an early age, I understood the term "running around like a chicken with its head cut off."   I am sure that I could not kill one of our chickens.  My cook books just happened to be behind the pot.  LOL

You said a chicken in every pot?

What was that again?

Did I hear you right?  You said a chicken in every pot???

Oh.   I see.

Now, how do I get out of here?

During the presidential campaign of 1928, a circular published by the Republican Party claimed that if Herbert Hoover won there would be “a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage.”

I have been making more pot holders.  I used the same basic pattern as the last one I posted, but I made an edging around using a single crochet 4, chain 3 all of the way around as the last row.  I also added velvet ribbon in one of them.  The ribbon looks like it does not match, but it really does.

I hope you and yours are doing well.   I wish you abundant blessings!  Dawnie
