Hand Made

Hi!  Happy New Year!

Recently someone has mentioned a few things that bothered me.  I thought I would address them and vent.

One comment was about one of my hats.  The person thought I should sell my hats.  They said that I could probably sell them for 8 to 10 dollars.  This should be a lot of money for me since I only spend  3 dollars on yarn.  This was not intended to be an insult, but it was!  First of all, most of the hats I  made were made from hand dyed yarn.  The yarn I like to use is 100% Merino wool.  This yarn sells for $19.00 to 30.00 per skein.  I usually have half of the skein left over, depending on the hat.  I did make 3 hats from one skein, but 2 of the hats were smaller and made for children.  At times, I add a mohair/silk strand of yarn along with the wool strand.  Obviously, this adds to the cost of making the hats.  Almost all of the hats I have made were made with thin yarn and on smaller knitting needles.  There is a lot of time invested in making the hats, even if the pattern is plain.  I could not make any money at all unless I asked for more money than most people would be willing to pay.  This is why I made the majority of the hats for my family and friends.  I also purchased pom poms for most of the hats I made.  Most pom poms range in price from 2.00 to 25.00.

The other thing I wanted to address was when a lady told me how disappointed she was about a Secret Santa making a knitted gift instead of purchasing it like everyone else in the group.  I believe it was a dishcloth and scrubber.  The person continued to complain that it only took about 5 minutes to make and it was probably made with leftover yarn.   Obviously, this person complaining does not knit or she would have known that the gift was more meaningful, better made, and took longer than 5 minutes to make.

I would much rather have a hand made gift than a store bought gift any day.  What about you?

Thank you for viewing!  Dawnie
