I hade a very productive week. This week I made a quilt top, a jar carrier, and two pot holders. I am also sorting through my scrap stash which includes 1/2 yard or less fabric. This size does not wrap around my comic boards for sorting fabrics. I do cut strips and squares from new stash so I have more variety. Scrappy quilts are not always made by me with scraps only. I do use some of my stash, but I seldom buy new fabric, unless it is for the back of the quilt. I need to iron my quilt top and drop it off at the long arm quilters. (The Master's Quilt Shop in Downs, Kansas) </p><p>Have you noticd that Melissa Gilbert from Little House on the Prarie has an on-line store that sells home goods and clothing. I saw a jar carrier on that site. I have a pattern like this for a casseroe carrier made the same way. I don't know where it is, but I will eventually find it. In the mean time, I made one and it turned out fine. I may want to increase the square by another inch. I made some apple butter and other goodies around Christmas. It would be handy to carry a jar to someone for safe passage. It would make a great gift, but many people do not can or place goodies in jars. </p><p>Thank you for viewing!</p><p>Dawnie</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaICVUSXwwOjlxaB8uL-vmylej7VswMmWBBrR7nFWIFZOe0OHiT9fe85NBUlqeqY1sz8BmGh9eOfn8nwGA3u5lDlr0O9AuRTufsb5veh-ojzwRAxrKTDfnN-cYrD7L3crJLyYgXKt-2GI702dDT6WmMUZ7d8052pu4dW7Jp4bAJghYKBH94_wleA6pdHE/s4080/20240316_191750.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3060" data-original-width="4080" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaICVUSXwwOjlxaB8uL-vmylej7VswMmWBBrR7nFWIFZOe0OHiT9fe85NBUlqeqY1sz8BmGh9eOfn8nwGA3u5lDlr0O9AuRTufsb5veh-ojzwRAxrKTDfnN-cYrD7L3crJLyYgXKt-2GI702dDT6WmMUZ7d8052pu4dW7Jp4bAJghYKBH94_wleA6pdHE/w425-h319/20240316_191750.jpg" width="425" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The top is acyually here on the left. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0TQo3DWh2H4nAufM5IT-Fje2zinBlr-PWN50Wn3mcHXJk3yay-EfqlZuYrL2A4aY-xj22XFUZ7JJYImvDg6XD22oHUShUsYaU2V6MHI7RLBsv4dTSQRKufVUBs85rvG8H3WSIddvnTaumJALvSJqtklayGuxEQl59_JIMeWIUXpu9vWOaacpVn0O2zzw/s4080/20240316_191746.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3060" data-original-width="4080" height="323" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0TQo3DWh2H4nAufM5IT-Fje2zinBlr-PWN50Wn3mcHXJk3yay-EfqlZuYrL2A4aY-xj22XFUZ7JJYImvDg6XD22oHUShUsYaU2V6MHI7RLBsv4dTSQRKufVUBs85rvG8H3WSIddvnTaumJALvSJqtklayGuxEQl59_JIMeWIUXpu9vWOaacpVn0O2zzw/w430-h323/20240316_191746.jpg" width="430" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I had a little help with the display. Recently, I saw a video where a lady made pin cushions or little pillows in heart shapes. They were very easily made with sewing on the right side and no turning after stuffing it. I used fabric and thread scraps for stuffing. She used 3 layers of fabric. I used 4 layers of fabric. They are reversible. Here are pictures. I added netting on one of them. It really didn't show up. Adult kids on the other hand tell me that we are out of laundry soap. Of course, a few days before my trip back, the refrigerator went out. This time, it was the compressor. My dog missed me too. <p></p><p>Do you remember how to turn baking soda into washing soda? We are out of washing soda and I need it to make laundry soap (laundry butter, laundry cream, laundry whip...). I will spread baking soda thinly onto a baking sheet and heat for about an hour at 400 degrees. I understand that washing soda is much better to clean with than baking soda. One reason is due to the PH level being higher. Even if you are not a soap maker, it may be worth a try to make some.</p><p>This will be the first time in 7 years that we won't be celebrating my youngest granddaughter and my mother's birthday at the same time. Mom passed away in April. Their birthdays were on 9/11. My granddaughter told me she wanted to celebrate Mom's birthday too, even though Mom won't be present. I am not sure what her plans are. </p><p>The older I become, the more I realize that many people out there do not have family or are estranged from them. My brother is a senior citizen with no kids or spouse. Since Mom passed away, the only one that will remember him on his birthday is me, unless I remind my sister. When managing property, I found many people far away from family and needing friendship. Thanksgiving is not that far away. Think about inviting others to your table. My late brother invited an older single man, Fuzz, and his male cousin to Thanksgiving dinner. My brother was in his early teens. I think he told my Mom the day of Thanksgiving. This was in the 70's; the cousin even dressed up and wore hippie beads. </p><p>Maybe Thanksgiving is on my mind because I am slowly sorting 30+ years of accumulated junk and I found a tub of Thanksgiving decorations. You would think that all of the decorations would be stored together. </p><p>What is on your weekend agenda? </p><p>I hope you have a great weekend! It was OK, but soap got stuck in the handle since it was hollow. I have used mostly quart jars with wide mouths. I was gone for two weeks and I came back to numerous jars mostly empty still on top of the dryer making music every time the dryer went on. I really can't figure out why the complete amount of soap can't be used and the jars rinced out and put away. I was able to pick up 3 big gallon pickle jars at an estate sale about a week ago. I think these will be my new storage containers. The jars are heavier but they contain much more laundry soap. </span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3bl5VvP3SgfKj3bZpsB4JStLskh8CtyBgPn5euj5NofxwDvchKr_8HTQ0Kk_cZMu24qTkDcpGkpsz_gEGjPBzoiXQSPVQ7guGQPIEhp_NqRMyQt0j9HJ7-3oz0tD-p-1hySbelRxmc7Uh24_WrerCPRpEzLSTcoNP26W2zPF_QUF3IU6lS-r6MqI7/s4096/IMG_20230530_154120.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4096" data-original-width="2304" height="446" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3bl5VvP3SgfKj3bZpsB4JStLskh8CtyBgPn5euj5NofxwDvchKr_8HTQ0Kk_cZMu24qTkDcpGkpsz_gEGjPBzoiXQSPVQ7guGQPIEhp_NqRMyQt0j9HJ7-3oz0tD-p-1hySbelRxmc7Uh24_WrerCPRpEzLSTcoNP26W2zPF_QUF3IU6lS-r6MqI7/w251-h446/IMG_20230530_154120.jpg" width="251" /></a></div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><p><span style="font-size: large;">What do you think?</span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">I found another picture of my Mom holding a fresh baked cherry pie in her vintage kitchen! </span> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhHUDgdsAJBnfyFt3TlJGp3x_nOyyQxdrBVU2sgXtJ3rOgz6Ax5ulpMU1O_KpmAI2ap_bKJbXmttBPhmUXmuObSkVqXr2Iqm0iaVl5YLb_MlWoWD1ebc-suA4RU15WzgARw39PYZhk2tAQ2qA_2gfrZN35LdaPyfD6rKof41idU739hDLskrVZSG9jU" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1188" data-original-width="891" height="362" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhHUDgdsAJBnfyFt3TlJGp3x_nOyyQxdrBVU2sgXtJ3rOgz6Ax5ulpMU1O_KpmAI2ap_bKJbXmttBPhmUXmuObSkVqXr2Iqm0iaVl5YLb_MlWoWD1ebc-suA4RU15WzgARw39PYZhk2tAQ2qA_2gfrZN35LdaPyfD6rKof41idU739hDLskrVZSG9jU=w272-h362" width="272" /></a></div><br /><p></p><div><span style="font-size: large;">Would you like to have Mom's great pie crust recipe? </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">Have a great day!</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">Dawnie</span></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><br /><div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP-gPiqXWcoTMd_zZ9WigCqLBOYfRW3E_IGQLdnFw8dBrpfXdCmVrFTNSCs3KLt1vBoal4LTfIkVf6mfkA8FU3iOp5m8i2wxpfF2bhPURA7b_L77_1W92-rOzk8bTAFwb_OJruX9t5SO3lDfnssoUD7dZaq3gO4MnEp4gxTrVUTSxHSIw70d8C6EZG/s1086/CusterCottageLogo_GIF_TransparentBackground.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="570" data-original-width="1086" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP-gPiqXWcoTMd_zZ9WigCqLBOYfRW3E_IGQLdnFw8dBrpfXdCmVrFTNSCs3KLt1vBoal4LTfIkVf6mfkA8FU3iOp5m8i2wxpfF2bhPURA7b_L77_1W92-rOzk8bTAFwb_OJruX9t5SO3lDfnssoUD7dZaq3gO4MnEp4gxTrVUTSxHSIw70d8C6EZG/w469-h247/CusterCottageLogo_GIF_TransparentBackground.jpg" width="469" /></a></div></div>I'll Pourhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14266973971611363878noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8166745332559091209.post-48057544912418719342023-05-25T21:51:00.000-05:002023-05-25T21:51:04.984-05:00It has been a long time.<p><span style="font-size: large;">It has been so long since I made a blog post. Days turned into weeks, which turned into months, then years. I think the birth of my second grandchild limited most of my blogging. I continued to create, but I didn't display my creations often and my "how-to" blog posts ended. My home life has changed somewhat. My house is still full of family and friends. Unfortunately, it isn't quiet most of the time. The old dogs have passed away and a new rescue chiwennie has taken their place. He is adorable, but he takes his job as a guard dog very seriously. Cage-free chickens still roam the backyard. I am retired now and I no longer need to answer the telephone after the first ring. I may not answer it at all. I photographed it outside on the fence. It is not ironed yet, but it looks good enough to view. I purchased pre-cut 30's reproduction prints from a store on Etsy. I asked if they used Accuquilt because I have an Accuquilt die to cut out fabric in the same Tumbler style. They use an Accuquilt professional cutting die. I planned to make a larger quilt where every other piece would be one of the delicate pink pieces I cut. However, I hadn't considered the size difference. I have 200 delicate pink tumbler pieces ready for me to use, but no print fabric pieces since the purchased pre-cut printed tumblers were about an inch smaller. I will be cutting prints from my stash and making another quilt.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhpttYo5NE6oDKafVuo8A7n3eAC5qRx0uuoxfAYq-kcHde7zhCC45pSsfJIwTdzbUXNM0pvL_zK2jMMqqdqeIQLPDIe8hJpHQC9HYzZosp5o5qHjruzXsSTtLRsm44fm1cB9W7Z8q2pfzSwS47y4Sqc-kUy--9nexsQwYl8Foi0lu2m02RFHOwBX4Hx" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1707" height="261" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhpttYo5NE6oDKafVuo8A7n3eAC5qRx0uuoxfAYq-kcHde7zhCC45pSsfJIwTdzbUXNM0pvL_zK2jMMqqdqeIQLPDIe8hJpHQC9HYzZosp5o5qHjruzXsSTtLRsm44fm1cB9W7Z8q2pfzSwS47y4Sqc-kUy--9nexsQwYl8Foi0lu2m02RFHOwBX4Hx=w464-h261" width="464" /></a></span></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">BBQ MEATBALLS </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">Grandma Elizabeth's Recipe</span></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2080" data-original-width="4160" height="311" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh8Ow19yFn220GvIC8EvsT8jF11-wC8uy-WYgF7yU3xiWdv-cpYQ3-9ala3hExdCHLWacz3FWAOX_tQc6fiT3zwXVlgcgtUlKNB68qbSrZY-7ntdLvYzMg1oHSJPeovKY9tdIstNl-SaPs3OAfk2H7RhxZi2F7ulgFE4cJY_UNhL0lmUckY1xkAzWD-=w566-h311" style="cursor: move;" width="566" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh8Ow19yFn220GvIC8EvsT8jF11-wC8uy-WYgF7yU3xiWdv-cpYQ3-9ala3hExdCHLWacz3FWAOX_tQc6fiT3zwXVlgcgtUlKNB68qbSrZY-7ntdLvYzMg1oHSJPeovKY9tdIstNl-SaPs3OAfk2H7RhxZi2F7ulgFE4cJY_UNhL0lmUckY1xkAzWD-" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh8Ow19yFn220GvIC8EvsT8jF11-wC8uy-WYgF7yU3xiWdv-cpYQ3-9ala3hExdCHLWacz3FWAOX_tQc6fiT3zwXVlgcgtUlKNB68qbSrZY-7ntdLvYzMg1oHSJPeovKY9tdIstNl-SaPs3OAfk2H7RhxZi2F7ulgFE4cJY_UNhL0lmUckY1xkAzWD-" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2080" data-original-width="4160" height="280" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhqZoj1XO2cG_jPcb4sx7Qn8TtwaIXv1delEL4U3BeaSPaFo1_1omOnd82MtpraXS_686XBWCengPPfk-6oT6He95VNzZLnCtBuwK00F41oeBEQaAG-RXTpyHnCIFfcjapRO--CExGYU7MwUvE28uRM_IKI2AmJoKvDEJUYmY-3vRgCjcxVX-tvjD28=w560-h280" width="560" /></a></span></div></div><p><span style="font-size: large;">This is a lot of work, but worth it!</span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">Thanks for viewing! My mother places all but one of hers in a drawer by her stove. My brother hates the loops. He thinks the plastic ones melt and the other loops get in his way. What is your preference? </span></i></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: large;"><i>I like to place loops in the corners of the hot pads/potholders I make. If I knit or crochet them, I usually make a loop with yarn. If I use fabric to make them, I sew a small plastic hoop on a corner of the fabric. I have used a leather strip for hanging in the past along with crocheting around the plastic rings. I find that the rings are what wear will out the fastest on potholders. I found plastic loose-leaf paper rings. The box I ordered has 5 colors of rings which can be easily installed and removed from a potholder if desired. </i></span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08DQTZLKS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1">https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08DQTZLKS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1</a><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: large;"><i>What do you think? </i></span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: large;"><i></i></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: large;"><i><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbSWUs4BCeyGdMkkjROqgxjEQDaXHMcX6dGFIYzZu1GejTHEMZ2Tb5M_1hUgsk-di3Ura30LeCkzd5ng8ZN8cH2Vr8uhdI-ELsieCWr828Fp_AkqzNik7Xo3YkwCEX59j8H6qPrv2mmIFiAPKDeWHeZSx9NUNPE3DhXp-9F55q8HgjkvZY-C9Ut2Dr" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1412" data-original-width="1080" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbSWUs4BCeyGdMkkjROqgxjEQDaXHMcX6dGFIYzZu1GejTHEMZ2Tb5M_1hUgsk-di3Ura30LeCkzd5ng8ZN8cH2Vr8uhdI-ELsieCWr828Fp_AkqzNik7Xo3YkwCEX59j8H6qPrv2mmIFiAPKDeWHeZSx9NUNPE3DhXp-9F55q8HgjkvZY-C9Ut2Dr=w491-h640" width="491" /></a></i></span></div><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: large;"><i><br /><br /></i></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: large;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhtM75kAnKMlVBDWMMdTRPnMhtoVwlu-nzqQGkImNhcAdWbABgHpzVdG1geMGvWuNtTQEjBnN7PkXq_ru8YDYiD86Nt1_SuwBvnAr4IbHeox6nADIsgm07ZagCbHKDRWpGYZNQ_O3GXGGEmnXry_zoVHDqPGjWV49b2LRxmemcSAIiCQUFPQ56ny1e-=s3060" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1965" data-original-width="3060" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhtM75kAnKMlVBDWMMdTRPnMhtoVwlu-nzqQGkImNhcAdWbABgHpzVdG1geMGvWuNtTQEjBnN7PkXq_ru8YDYiD86Nt1_SuwBvnAr4IbHeox6nADIsgm07ZagCbHKDRWpGYZNQ_O3GXGGEmnXry_zoVHDqPGjWV49b2LRxmemcSAIiCQUFPQ56ny1e-=w400-h256" width="400" /></a></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-size: large;">My grandmother and us 4 kids in the early 60's.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-size: large;">They provided this mobile home for my dad as part of his salary. Years ago she made a quilt for me. Off and on, I got poked by a pin, but it took me some time to locate that pin and remove it. In this case, the pin had a glass head. I was able to use a pair of pliers and break the glass head and the pin slipped out easily. A couple of months ago, my brother gave me a small quilt that my grandmother made for him. He has had the quilt for many years. (30+ years) The quilt fits a twin-size bed, but not a full-sized bed. I have a smaller bed, so I decided to use the quilt. Every once and a while, I felt a little pin-poke. Yes, this quilt also had a pin left in it when grandma quilted the quilt. Ha! Ha! It was more difficult to remove this pin because it had a flat metalhead. I had to maneuver the pin to a seam and guide it through 2 stitches. This story is not to make fun of Grandma, but to share funny memories. I love these old memories of Grandma! </p><p>Yesterday my granddaughter asked me why the dog's ears were sticking up like they were? My comment back was that he had his listening ears on. </p><p>Dawnie</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FlheK1Vxcuc/YGDNTvVJP3I/AAAAAAAAI-A/_yrQU4-eYOEXlpd41-5zar74V5ToJB6WQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/20210204_174621.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FlheK1Vxcuc/YGDNTvVJP3I/AAAAAAAAI-A/_yrQU4-eYOEXlpd41-5zar74V5ToJB6WQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/20210204_174621.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>I'll Pourhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14266973971611363878noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8166745332559091209.post-2809242272646266892021-02-14T13:39:00.002-06:002021-02-14T13:39:29.086-06:00Update on Whipped Laundry Butter<p><i><span style="font-size: large;"></span></i></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R4VhveDh6eE/YCl5uIjLcbI/AAAAAAAAI9E/NDW97sxt2Joecr-PMj81EBKuVudSC2ivgCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/20210213_191152_HDR_2%2B%25281%2529.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1054" data-original-width="2048" height="206" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R4VhveDh6eE/YCl5uIjLcbI/AAAAAAAAI9E/NDW97sxt2Joecr-PMj81EBKuVudSC2ivgCLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h206/20210213_191152_HDR_2%2B%25281%2529.png" width="400" /></a></span></i></div><i><span style="font-size: large;"><br />From time to time humans decide to take shortcuts. Sometimes the shortcuts can work and at times the result is a complete disaster. I made lots of soap last year. It was just collecting dust and waiting for me to make laundry soap from it. I made the soap from coconut oil, lye (sodium hydroxide), water, and essential oil. This soap was made without extra fats or colors (zero fat). I used lavender essential oil for fragrance when making the soap. I usually grate the soap up and follow the laundry butter recipe. In our house, we ran out of all laundry butter and had to use store-bought laundry soap. Due to the extra cost and extra chemicals in store-bought soap, I was in a hurry to make more laundry butter so I wouldn't have to buy more at the grocery store. I couldn't find my salad shooter so instead of shredding or grating the soap up nicely, I chunked up the soap. I made a double batch, where I would need 12 ounces of chunks. I poured 12 cups of boiling water onto the chunks into a large plastic container with a lid. I placed the lid on the soap and water and left this mixture alone for hours. When I got a chance to work on the soap again, the water was cold and the soap chunks had melted into the water. I added 2 cups of washing powder (made from baking soda) and 2 cups of 20 Mule Team Borax to this mixture. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6L0HXzRxjMk/YCl8T8FyIzI/AAAAAAAAI9Y/LM1Rjx1xpWsy3tSZMmP8EGsUPlGMBXZhACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/20210213_183946.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1068" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6L0HXzRxjMk/YCl8T8FyIzI/AAAAAAAAI9Y/LM1Rjx1xpWsy3tSZMmP8EGsUPlGMBXZhACLcBGAsYHQ/w209-h400/20210213_183946.png" width="209" /></a></div><br />I blended a few minutes (2-8 min.) with my stick blender and it whipped up and thickened. I wasn't sure if the whip would go down or not so I was hesitant to pace the soap into containers. I did it anyway and it stayed nicely whipped. I have since made 3 more batches and this still works fine. The amount it makes depends on the amount of air whipped into the mixture. This last batch made 7.5 quarts. I am very happy to find that this shortcut worked! If you try this and it works for you, let me know. Thanks for viewing this post! You tried to say the words correctly so you could be understood. My youngest granddaughter is the same way. We were in the bathroom getting ready to go somewhere. She was pushing me away from the sink saying "It's just me. It's just me. It's just me." I knew it was just her. Why was she pushing me away from the sink so she could be in front??? Then it occurred to me. She was meaning to say excuse me. I have had the giggles several times just thinking about this. </i></span></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;"><i>I hope you have a great day!</i></span></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;"><i>Dawnie</i></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d9pq6RVoeYU/VP5av3nA3nI/AAAAAAAAGGQ/Tm-2SCa3Kb8bBXAOnuFCtLznqEtfseNEQCPcBGAYYCw/s1004/heart%252Bfloral%252Bvintage%252BImage%252BGraphicsFairy010b.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1004" data-original-width="945" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d9pq6RVoeYU/VP5av3nA3nI/AAAAAAAAGGQ/Tm-2SCa3Kb8bBXAOnuFCtLznqEtfseNEQCPcBGAYYCw/s320/heart%252Bfloral%252Bvintage%252BImage%252BGraphicsFairy010b.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>I'll Pourhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14266973971611363878noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8166745332559091209.post-70026688703650542202020-10-04T17:29:00.001-05:002020-10-06T13:46:43.445-05:00Scraps<p><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"><i>What do you do with the scraps you have leftover from sewing and/or quilting projects? I watched a podcast on Youtube and he mentioned that he used all of his smaller scraps for dog bed stuffing. (Making it Fun with Rob Appell Podcast on Youtube) He got the idea from a shop he visited. The dog beds are made like pillows. The fabric is stuffed in the bag and the end of the bag is sewn up. Rob shredded his scraps up with a rotary cutter prior to doing the stuffing. I tried this but didn't do the shredding. It is a little heavy and not as fluffy as it would have been if I had followed directions. LOL If you don't have a dog, you can donate the beds to a shelter.</i></span></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"><i>I am cutting pieces 2.5 by 4.5 inches for a scrappy quilt. When there are leftover pieces large enough to measure 2.5 by 2.5, I am cutting them out. A lot of scrappy projects use that size. Last year I made a pumpkin table runner using 2.5-inch orange pieces. It sure makes a project fun when various colors and patterns are used.😁</i></span></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"><i>I also like to make crumb quilts. Actually, table runners and doll quilts. They call small scraps of fabric crumbs. There are many ways to start a crumb quilt. Here is a couple of examples of table runners in progress. Some look like strip piecing and crumb quilting combined. There are no rules. I do this for fun. Once you have quite a few scraps sewn together, you can cut out a square and possibly border the square, or make the whole quilt in one large piece. I saw another podcast the other day where she was making squares and sewing them to a plain fabric in order to make half-square triangles. (Sugarido Podcast on Youtube) The possibilities are endless!</i></span></p><p><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: large;"><i>Have a great week! <span style="font-size: large;">My sister and I were visiting on the phone about Thanksgiving food. She mentioned a pumpkin cake. I now had to make one. I happened to have canned pumpkin and a yellow cake mix. I Googled pumpkin cake. Recipes I found ranged from those 2 ingredients I have along with pumpkin pie spice. Those cakes looked too dense. I made a few changes and this is what I found to be the best pumpkin cake I have ever eaten. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Pumpkin Cake:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">1 package yellow cake mix (I used Betty Crocker.)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">1can of pumpkin puree (I used Libby's)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">2 eggs</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">1/4 cup oil (I prefer sunflower oil.)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">1/4 cup of cream (You can substitute the cream with milk)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice (I make a blend of 5 spices but it is much simpler to buy pumpkin pie spice. I will share the blend at a later date.)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I placed all of the above ingredients into a large mixing bowl and mixed the ingredients with an electric mixer for approximately 3 minutes.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Prepare a 9 X 13 cake pan by oiling the inside and coating the oil with a light dusting of flour. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Note: If you do not have flour, reserve a tablespoon or two of cake mix and use this in place of flour.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 min. The cake should spring back in the center when lightly pressed with a finger. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Cool, cut, and serve with whipped cream.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-size: large;">Not long ago I found 3 quilt blocks with the Dresden plate design. I have always loved this design. The stitching around the design is made with a blanket stitch in pink thread and of course by hand. Most people would pass this purchase up since the blocks are older and limited to 3. I decided to make the quilt blocks into a table runner. I cut the blocks down, did the sewing on the top and I was making the ties when I folded the project up for the evening. Oh no! I was about 3/4 of an inch or more off on the end measurements. I was so careful measuring and cutting---or at least I thought I was. I took over half of the table runner apart, corrected the size issue, placed the table runner back together and I now enjoy it on my table. </span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">If you come across a single quilt square or two and you love it, don't pass up the purchase. There are several ways to use quilt squares. Fabric strips can be sewn around a quilt square to make it larger and use it as a table topper. It doesn't have to be quilted with bound edges. I have used a quilt block I made (it looked vintage) for placing under a decorative item in a decorative grouping in the family room. I hung the edge of the quilt block over the top of our bookcase. This quilt top had raw edges. Also, if you have a newer quilt block and you live in a country home or farmhouse, don't forget that you can tea stain quilt blocks used for decor. My last suggestion is to use a quilt block as a backing for family picture</span><span style="font-size: large;">s. </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">A while back I found an antique pot holder made in the shape of a bonnet. I wanted to replicate it, with a few little changes. This is what I found:</span><br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rULWPI0QBv8/XaV8SjfbkCI/AAAAAAAAIzs/62ix5SABaz8iDz7UP2JmC9fV1oGgx9UKQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20191012_192700.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1600" height="358" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rULWPI0QBv8/XaV8SjfbkCI/AAAAAAAAIzs/62ix5SABaz8iDz7UP2JmC9fV1oGgx9UKQCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/20191012_192700.png" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The top of the bonnet has been quilted with a sewing machine. This is very thin.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I made a pattern. I am not an artist. Remember that when you view my pattern. LOL Oh, the pattern is free......</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8Cc07xhZOhA/XaV8vBvwJ5I/AAAAAAAAIz0/ynqQA4sbzjQVz3AeAxKtRgUxKg_27-JugCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20191012_192736.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1211" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8Cc07xhZOhA/XaV8vBvwJ5I/AAAAAAAAIz0/ynqQA4sbzjQVz3AeAxKtRgUxKg_27-JugCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/20191012_192736.png" width="302" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">This is what I made. I used ric rac instead of lace. I also put ric rac along the bottom instead of bias tape. I used a plastic ring to hang the bonnet instead of bias tape. I felt that the bonnet needed to be tied. You won't notice it, but I actually quilted the bonnet at the front and along the left of the bias tape on the top of the bonnet.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I used cotton fabric I had, but you can buy a fat quarter if you don't have fabric laying around. I made my bias binding from more cotton fabric I had on hand, but it would have been easier to purchase some. The cotton batting I placed inside of the bonnet was also leftover scraps from quilting projects. The ric rac came from a package, but I doubt I used more than 12 inches. I also had the plastic ring on hand. All of the supplies are available at a fabric or hobby store. I used white thread so you can see the sewing. Matching black thread would have looked better. </span><br />

<span style="color: #741b47; font-size: large;">For years I have made lavender sachets. They are great inside a drawer or closet. I recall someone placing lavender inside netting and lace and placed on a fancy clothes hanger. When my son was younger we placed lavender essential oil on his inside wrist. At times he would be so hyper and smelling lavender seemed to help him calm down some. The essential oil was mixed with a carrier oil so it wouldn't be too strong and possibly burn his skin. A lightbulb went off in my head today. I thought it may help my granddaughters sleep better. At this time, only one of them has issues with sleeping. Part of this is due to poor sleep hygiene practiced in her home. (Inconsistent bedtimes is actually called poor sleep hygiene. LOL ) I should state that all of us in my family are very sensory and we smell and touch most everything. That may explain my fiber obsession. Rather than giving my granddaughters a pouch of lavender buds, I decided to hang one over their heads while they sleep; attaching it to the headboards. It could also be placed inside the pillowcases. To make the pouch, I used a 5 inch square from my charm packs and cut it down the center. With the wrong sides together and the right sides on the outside. I sewed 3 sides of the pouch and left the 4th side open to fill with lavender buds. A charm pack is a package of 5-inch fabric squares used for quilting. After filling these pouches, I sewed the last side and pinked around all edges. I used about a quarter-inch seam allowance and I used pinking shears to pink close to the outside stitching. To tie the pouch to the headboard, I sewed a 12 -14-inch long ribbon across the top of the pouch. These are portable and can go into pockets and used when needed for adults or children. The 4th side could be left open and tied shut with a nice ribbon bow, however; kids will open the pouches and get the lavender buds all over. I also thought that a banner or bunting made with hearts would look lovely draped across a girls headboard and it would give off more lavender aroma since there would be several heart pouches. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">For directional fabric cut, 2 pieces of fabric 9 inches by 39 inches. If you do not have a directional fabric, cut 1 piece 17 inches by 39 inches.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Now you will want to sew the side seam. Skip 1/2 inch of sewing on one side of the center of this seam. It doesn't matter which side of the seam. This is for stringing the elastic through and gathering the bottom at a later time. Press side seams open. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Fold the lining in the center along the seam. Approx. 3/4 inch from this fold, sew all the way around the bottom. String elastic through this tube you just made, going through the opening just made by the skipped 3/4 inch, as shown above. Tighten elastic and make this bottom as tight as possible, giving the bottom of the basket cushioning for the eggs.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Sew 1.5-inches from the top fold. String in the elastic through the top between the top stitching and the 1.5-inch stitching seam. Go through the side seam area and through both ruffle pieces. You want to cut a piece the length of the circumference of the basket by 2 (all the way around the top of the basket twice). Temporarily tie the elastic on one side. On the other side, with pliers, open the handle wire and place the elastic under the handle. Place the handle back to where it belongs. Now you can untie the temporary elastic and tie it so the ruffle sticks out and the liner fits well around the basket. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The basket is lined, The prototype was not lined and the wrong side of the fabric showed through the sides. In the prototype, I placed a small circular cushion in the bottom for extra egg cushioning. I don't think it is necessary with the doubled fabric in this lining. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I tied some ric rac with the ribbon onto the side of the handle. I purchased the egg baskets from Atwoods. Kindly let me know if this is not understandable.</span><br />

I made a pumpkin table runner using Lori Holt's pumpkin pattern from her Farm Girl Vintage book. <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Its-Sew-Emma-ISE906-Vintage/dp/0988174979/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=farm+girl+vintage+quilting+book&pd_rd_r=ffe0512e-a87f-4622-a0b9-79369750c373&pd_rd_w=tk4Wy&pd_rd_wg=HKHLV&pf_rd_p=67c9d84c-d98a-4415-a549-dd3360e9d207&pf_rd_r=K9E1141M9M3YRR8SDAGX&qid=1568591589&s=gateway&sr=8-1">https://www.amazon.com/Its-Sew-Emma-ISE906-Vintage/dp/0988174979/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=farm+girl+vintage+quilting+book&pd_rd_r=ffe0512e-a87f-4622-a0b9-79369750c373&pd_rd_w=tk4Wy&pd_rd_wg=HKHLV&pf_rd_p=67c9d84c-d98a-4415-a549-dd3360e9d207&pf_rd_r=K9E1141M9M3YRR8SDAGX&qid=1568591589&s=gateway&sr=8-1</a> <br />

The place I worked has been sold and they brought in most of their crew, so I am unemployed. I worked there for 13 years. You would think I have had a lot of time on my hands and I would get a lot of things done. Wrong. I have caught up on my sleep. I have also caught up on TV and movie binge-watching. What are you up to?</div>
